Hold a Referendum Before Extending Supreme Court Judges’ Terms – Namal Slams Government

If the government is planning to extend the terms of Supreme Court judges, they must first put it to a referendum and get the people’s approval, says SLPP National Organizer and Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa.

Addressing a public gathering, Rajapaksa pointed out that amid the soaring cost of living, the current administration has completely failed to fulfill its election promises, shattering public trust by imposing an unfair tax burden on the citizens.

He highlighted that farmers, fishermen, students, business owners, and investors are all struggling today due to fertilizer shortages, skyrocketing food prices, and heavy utility and tax bills.

Criticizing how the government handles crime, he noted that despite repeated assurances from authorities, organized crimes continue unchecked. He also accused the administration of filling up prisons due to massive delays in judicial proceedings and forensic reports.

Referring to the proposed constitutional amendment to extend the retirement age of Supreme Court judges, Rajapaksa stated that the government is pushing this forward despite strong opposition from legal and judicial circles. If the government truly views this service extension as a national priority, they must seek public mandate through a referendum, he emphasized.

Concluding his remarks, Rajapaksa called on his supporters to strengthen the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna at the grassroots level, noting that their party’s core objective is to build a modern political movement capable of fulfilling the aspirations of the country’s younger generation.
