Former IGP Pujith Jayasundara Sentenced to Death for Failing to Prevent Easter Sunday Attacks

Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Pujith Jayasundara has been sentenced to death by the Colombo Special Three-Judge High Court for failing to prevent the 2019 terrorist attacks and for criminal negligence of duty.

The lengthy verdict, which took over four hours to deliver, was handed down by a three-judge bench comprising Priyantha Liyanage, Viraj Weerasuriya, and Thilakaratne Bandara.

Key Highlights of the Verdict:

Disregarding Intelligence Reports: The court pointed out that despite receiving specific intelligence on the afternoon of April 20, 2019, from the then Director of the State Intelligence Service regarding planned suicide attacks targeting Catholic churches and tourist hotels, the former IGP grossly neglected his primary duty and responsibility to protect the country’s citizens.
Loss of Human Lives: The bench noted that this failure of duty and criminal negligence directly resulted in the tragic loss of over 260 innocent lives and left more than 580 others seriously injured.
Majority Decision: High Court Bench Chairman Priyantha Liyanage and Judge Thilakaratne Bandara found the accused guilty by majority decision. Meanwhile, delivering the minority verdict, Judge Viraj Weerasuriya stated that the prosecution had failed to prove the charges beyond a reasonable doubt and that the accused should be acquitted.

However, based on the majority ruling, the court imposed the death penalty, taking into account the grave nature of the offense.
