The no-confidence motion brought forward by the opposition against Minister of Justice Harshana Nanayakkara—accusing him of completely failing to ensure the safety of prisoners and prison officials regarding the recent serious unrest and clashes at the Negombo Prison—was debated under highly heated conditions in Parliament today (24th).
Severe Accusations from the Opposition
Addressing the house, opposition MPs pointed out that despite intelligence units providing prior warnings of an escalating clash between two factions inside the prison, the ministry and the prison department failed to take adequate security measures. They strongly emphasized that the minister has severely neglected his primary responsibility of safeguarding the lives of detainees, and that the current prison system has fallen entirely under the control of underworld kingpins and drug traffickers. Consequently, the opposition exerted intense pressure, demanding that the minister take moral responsibility for this tragedy and resign from his post immediately.
Government’s Response and the Minister’s Stance
Rejecting the opposition’s allegations, the ruling party stated that this incident was not a mere administrative failure, but rather a calculated conspiracy orchestrated by organized criminals to disrupt the government’s rigorous crackdown on drug networks within prisons. They also pointed out that the minister acted swiftly to bring the situation under control by immediately deploying the Police Special Task Force (STF), thereby averting a larger disaster.
Addressing the debate, Minister of Justice Harshana Nanayakkara stated that he did not fail to manage the situation and that an independent committee has already been appointed to bring all those behind the incident before the law.
The parliamentary debate is scheduled to continue into the night, following which a vote on the no-confidence motion is set to be taken.
