Opposition Gathers at One Table to Protect Judicial Independence: Special Meeting at the Opposition Leader’s Office

A special meeting of the main political leaders of the opposition was held to discuss the government’s proposed resolution regarding the extension of the retirement age of Supreme Court judges.

A notable feature of this discussion, held under the leadership of Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, was the participation of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe. Additionally, reports indicate that several key opposition political leaders—including Dilith Jayaweera, leader of the Sarana Jana Bala, and Namal Rajapaksa of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna—joined this meeting.

The opposition’s common stance regarding the government’s proposal to amend the retirement age of Supreme Court judges was discussed at length during the meeting.

With the Ranil-Sajith meeting bringing several major opposition political groups to the same discussion table, it has drawn special attention in the political sphere. Consequently, political focus is now directed toward whether the opposition will take joint action against the government’s proposal in the future.
