අපේ රටේ මෑත ඉතිහාසයේ වෙනත් කිසිදු පාලනයකට වඩා පාතාලය සහ මත්ද්රව්ය මර්ධනය වෙනුවෙන් දැඩි පියවර ගන්නා බව රජය නිරන්තරයෙන් පවසයි. එය නොරහසකි. නමුදු, මේ වන විට සමාජයම බියෙන් මුසපත් කරමින් පැවති “දවසේ වෙඩිල්ල” යැයි කියනු ලබන ප්රසිද්ධ වෙඩි තැබීම් යම් තරමකට පාලනය වී ඇතත්, දැන් ඒ වෙනුවට ඇරඹී ඇත්තේ වඩාත් භයානක ප්රවණතාවකි. එනම්, පාතාලයේ යැයි කියාගන්නා පුද්ගලයන්ගේ දුරකතන සංවාද, තර්ජන සහ මරණීය අනතුරු ඇඟවීම් මාධ්ය ඔස්සේ ප්රසිද්ධියට පත් කරමින්, ඒ පසුබිමේ මිනීමරු ප්රචණ්ඩත්වයට අනවශ්ය වටිනාකමක් ලබා දීමය.
මාධ්ය සදාචාරය බිඳ වැටීම සහ පාතාලයට ලැබෙන අනුබලය
“කංජිපානි ඉම්රාන්”, “නිලමේ” සහ “දෙහි බාලේ” වැනි නම් කියවමින්, අද වන විට ඇතැමුන් මාධ්ය නමින් පෙනී සිටිමින් කරන මෙම අනතුරු ඇඟවීම් ප්රසිද්ධ කිරීම අතිශයින්ම පිළිකුල් සහගතය. රටක් විනාශ කළේ දේශපාලුවන් පමණක් නොව, අද හැට හුටාමාරක් ලෙස බෝ වී සිටින, කිසිදු සදාචාරයක් නොමැති, කුමන අනීතික කුණු රහස් හෝ විකුණා කන බහුතරයක් වූ මාධ්යවේදීන් යැයි කියා ගන්නන්ම බව කිව යුතුය.
පාතාලයට වටිනාකම් දෙමින්, ඔවුන්ගේ මරණ තර්ජන ජනගත කිරීම කුමන මාධ්ය කෙරුවාවක්දැයි අප අසිය යුත්තේ එබැවිනි. පාතාලය මඩින බවට සහතික වන, නීතිය රජයන රටක, අරූ කිව් දේ, මරණ බවට කරන තර්ජන සහ ඒවාට දෙන පිළිතුරු ප්රසිද්ධ කිරීම සැබවින්ම පාතාලයට ලබා දෙන අනුග්රහයක් සහ ඔවුන් නඩත්තු කිරීමක් මිස වෙනකක් නොවේ.
අතීත අත්දැකීම් සහ වර්තමාන අනතුර
අපේ මතකයට් අනුව, මෙසේ පාතාලයට අස්වැසිල්ලක් සහ වටිනාකමක් ලබා දීම ආරම්භ වූයේ අතීතයේ අනුර හොරේෂස් මාධ්යවේදියා විසින් ලියූ “ගිනි අවි සහ ගිනි කෙළි” වැනි පොත් වලිනි. එදා එය එතරම් බරපතල ලෙස නොපෙනුණ ද, අද වන විට අපරාධ රැල්ලක් බවට පත්ව ඇති සමාජයක, මෙවැනි මරණීය තර්ජන සාක්ෂි සහිතව ප්රසිද්ධ කිරීම යනු රටේ නීතිය සෙල්ලමට ගැනීමක් බව අවධාරණය කළ යුතුය.
රජය සහ ආරක්ෂක අංශ “අපි සියල්ල පාලනය කරන්නෙමු” යැයි කීවද, සැබවින්ම ඒ පාලනයේ දුර්වලකම සහ අසරණභාවය දැන් සිදුවන දේවලින් මුලු රටටම පැහැදිලි වේ. නීතිය හා සාමය ආරක්ෂා කිරීමට වගකිව යුත්තන් මෙය වහා අවබෝධ කරගත යුතුය. නොඑසේ නම්, අද කල්ලි දෙකක් අතර පමණක් සීමා වී ඇති මෙම තර්ජන ගර්ජන, හෙට දින මේ රටේ සාමාන්ය පුරවැසියා සහ නීතිය ක්රියාත්මක කරන්නන් වෙතද පැතිරෙනු ස්ථිරය. මෙය මතු දිනක අත්වන බිහිසුණු විනාශයකට දොරටු විවර කිරීමක් නොවේදැයි අපි බලධාරීන්ගෙන් ප්රශ්න කර සිටිමු.

It is no secret that the current administration has taken stricter measures to curb the underworld and drug trafficking than any previous regime in our country’s history. However, while high-profile daytime shootings—once infamous as the “shooting of the day”—have subsided to some extent, a far more dangerous trend has now taken their place. Instead of physical gunfire, we are now witnessing the broadcast of telephone conversations involving alleged underworld figures, publicizing threats and impending murders, thereby giving undue prominence and glamour to criminal violence.
The Collapse of Media Ethics and Patronage of the Underworld
Throwing around notorious names like “Kanjipani Imran,” “Nilame,” and “Dehi Bale,” certain elements posing as journalists today publicize these warnings in an utterly despicable manner. It must be stated that our country was ruined not only by politicians, but also by the countless, mushrooming pseudo-journalists devoid of any ethics, who feed on sensationalism by peddling any unethical, filthy gossip for profit.
One must seriously question what kind of journalistic performance it is to valorize the underworld and broadcast their death threats to the public. In a country where the government claims to suppress the underworld and uphold the rule of law, publishing who said what, threats of murder, and retaliatory messages amounts to nothing less than providing media patronage and endorsement to criminal syndicates.
Past Experiences and Present Dangers
As we recall, glorifying and giving value to the underworld in this manner initially gained traction through publications like “Gini Avi saha Gini Keli” (Firearms and Fireworks) written by past journalist Anura Horeshas . While it may not have seemed as severe back then, in a society currently plagued by waves of crime, publicly broadcasting concrete evidence of death threats is a blatant mockery of the nation’s legal system.
Even though the government and security forces claim to have everything under control, the reality of that control—and its shortcomings—is vividly demonstrated to the entire country by what is happening right now. Those responsible for law and order must realize this immediately. If they fail to do so, it is as certain as the sun and the moon that these threats and intimidation, currently restricted to rival gangs, will tomorrow spread to target ordinary citizens and the enforcers of the law themselves. We strongly question the authorities: is this not paving the way for a catastrophic destruction in the near future?
